Another Trucking Assignment !

Posted on January 10, 2024July 6, 2025 By Ann Thompson

I have written previously of an assignment that I had of designing the 1975 annual report for Consolidated Freightways. It was full of great photos by George Knight. That was the assignment When we covered my drawing board before the client came into our art studio. He was not to know that a female was designing a trucking job. Trucking was man’s work!

In 1997, I got the chance work on a publication for Viking Freight System, Inc. because Dick Moore brought it home and offered me the chance to create some humorous illustrations for the various pages of the VIKING MAGAZINE. To see if they would approve of my art style, I made this sketch on tracing paper. Dick presented it with his 28 page layout.

There was no “hiding” my (female) contribution to the magazine.
No one asked.
I did not sign my drawings and I did not get a credit line for the art.
I was Anonymous.

“Hammer down!” and “Put the pedal to the metal” is trucker talk for: “Step on the accelerator”! Popularized from commercial truck driver’s CB radio culture, back in the ‘70s. For 101 more, see: Trucking Industry Slang and Terms.
